In everyday life, we take small actions that could make a lot of difference to the environment. Right from the time we wake up in the morning to the time we sleep, we make use of different natural and man-made resources that have an impact on the planet. Using electricity, fuel, water, food, soil, trees and other living beings for our development is part of our daily routine. How can we make “living sustainably” a way of life?
Why Living Sustainably is important?
We all are wondering why we need to live an eco-friendly life. Because over the decades, man has overused all the natural resources and polluted the environment and earth to an extent that it has imbalanced the ecological balance between nature and humans. It has now become the need of the hour to start adapting practices and habits that will replace toxic lifestyles with sustainable ones. We all need to understand that there is no better time than now to act on sustainability. Our Earth’s capacity to rejuvenate is slowing down with the loss of forests and uncontrolled afforestation. Our Earth’s capacity to support healthy lives on the planet is dwindling rapidly. The speed at which we are consuming natural resources and generating waste is going up rapidly. Change should therefore first start with us as individuals, raising our self-awareness and demanding products and services that are produced sustainably and contribute to giving back to nature.
There are so many easy-to-imbibe habits that can help in restoring our old true happy planet. For example, when we choose to light our home or office, we can opt for LED over conventional light as they consume less electricity and bring in a lot of energy savings which also means spending less at the end of the month. Another example from our everyday life is short trips.
For shorter distances we can use a bicycle or public transport instead of our personal car or motorbike, saving both money on fuel and reducing vehicular pollution. Not only this, in our kitchen, we can save gas by doing simple hacks like covering the pot with a lid and saving about 25% of gas. Other than this, while shopping we can contribute to sustainability by not indulging ourselves in fast fashion and adapting the concept of reuse, recycle and reduce. We can not ditch paper completely; however, we can reduce usage and opt for recycled paper wherever possible. Above all, sustainability should not be limited to discussions and should not become a fancy term, rather it should become a way of life to preserve our planet for future generations.
